about vmotd

The elitist fine art of photography is turning into an omnipresent grassroots activity before our very eyes.

vmotd is at the foreground of this democratization at the hands of smartphone users everywhere. Going places, knowing that there inevitably will be an object for anyone  holding a smartphone (vertically or horizontally), capturing it and being instantaneously able to show the picture to everyone on social media.

The art of creating images is being appropriated by digitally savvy users unbound by artistic standards. This realization drives vmotd and he is this movement’s showpiece.

vmotd got hooked on photography working for Leica – an iconic brand as well as the embodiment of gearism. Here he learned about and left behind the technology and shifted his attention to the image and its composition. That is when he turned from the stilted, inaccessible art form of elite photography to joyous, utterly spontaneous shooting.

Fascinated by the interplay of man with and in the ambience  – light, lines and shapes – and the discontinuation it brings, vmotd adds his touch naturally by choosing the angle and the frame. With his eye for lines, angles and structural beauty vmotd's work often returns to minimalistic, architectural frames with high contrast and contrasting forms and shapes. With radically simplified visual storytelling and a tongue in cheek nod to classic photography his pictures are monochrome.

What vmotd sees in pictures, displayed in his words: “The choice of what you fill the finite space of a frame with is entirely yours. That choice though reveals everything and often more than you care for.”
